What's Happening?
The Census 2027 in India has commenced its first phase in Delhi with the start of House Listing Operations. This follows the closure of the digital self-enumeration window. The process involves enumerators conducting door-to-door data collection across
26 wards in East Delhi. The census, which is the 16th since its inception and the 8th post-independence, integrates digital technology and enhanced data security measures. The government has allocated Rs 11,718.24 crore for the census, which will be conducted in two phases: house listing from April to September 2026, and population enumeration in February 2027.
Why It's Important?
The Census 2027 is a critical exercise for India, providing comprehensive demographic, social, and economic data essential for policy-making and governance. The integration of digital tools and data security measures marks a significant advancement in the census process, ensuring more accurate and efficient data collection. The data collected will inform government decisions across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and infrastructure, impacting millions of citizens. The census also sets a precedent for future data collection efforts, emphasizing the importance of technology in large-scale national exercises.
What's Next?
Following the house listing phase, the census will proceed to population enumeration in early 2027. The data collected will undergo analysis and compilation, with results expected to guide policy decisions and resource allocation. The success of this census could influence future methodologies and the adoption of digital tools in other large-scale data collection efforts. Stakeholders, including government agencies and researchers, will closely monitor the process to ensure its effectiveness and accuracy.
