What's Happening?
The Indian government has announced an extension of the exemption from mandatory sourcing of Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) List-II solar PV cells for net metering and open access renewable energy projects until December 31. This decision,
communicated by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), provides a limited transition window for these projects, which was previously set to expire on May 31. The extension aims to support standalone solar PV module manufacturers by protecting their investments and creating additional demand. The government emphasizes that this is not a blanket extension for all solar projects, and projects commissioned after December 31, 2026, must comply with ALMM List-II provisions.
Why It's Important?
This extension is significant as it supports the growth of India's domestic solar manufacturing industry, aligning with the government's goal of making India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing. By providing more time for manufacturers to source solar PV cells from ALMM List-II, the government aims to strengthen the domestic supply chain and establish India as a key player in the global solar market. This move could potentially boost the renewable energy sector, attract investments, and create jobs, contributing to India's economic growth and energy security.
What's Next?
Following this extension, stakeholders in the solar industry are expected to adjust their strategies to comply with the ALMM List-II requirements by the new deadline. The government will likely continue to engage with industry players to ensure a smooth transition and address any challenges that arise. As the December 31, 2026, compliance deadline approaches, manufacturers and project developers will need to ramp up their efforts to meet the sourcing requirements, potentially leading to increased domestic production capacity.
