What's Happening?
Recent flooding in Chattogram, caused by continuous heavy rainfall and tidal surges, has resulted in significant damage to the region's agriculture and fisheries sectors. The flooding, which occurred from July 5 to July 11, submerged Aus paddy fields
and summer vegetable crops across several upazilas, including Banshkhali, Satkania, Lohagara, Chandanaish, and Sitakunda. According to Md. Omar Faruk, additional deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Chattogram, approximately 9,043 hectares of Aus paddy fields and 5,907 hectares of vegetable crops were damaged. The fisheries sector also suffered extensive losses, with around 10,000 ponds and shrimp enclosures affected, leading to a financial loss of approximately Tk91.41 crore. The most severe damage was reported in Banshkhali Upazila, where fish were washed away from 2,500 ponds and 310 shrimp enclosures.

Once floodwaters recede, a field-level survey will be conducted to assess the full extent of the damage, and a final report will be submitted to the ministry. The government and local authorities may need to implement measures to improve flood management and infrastructure to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Additionally, support for affected businesses and farmers will be crucial in aiding recovery and ensuring economic stability in the region.
