What's Happening?
The Maryland Agriculture Council has appointed Jenell Eck McHenry to assist in managing its programs, events, and communications. McHenry, a veteran of Maryland’s agricultural sector, will work alongside
Executive Director Susan G. Summers and Assistant Executive Director Gail P. Yeiser. Her primary focus will be coordinating the annual Taste of Maryland Agriculture gala and other council initiatives. This appointment comes as the council, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting Maryland’s agricultural industry through education and advocacy, expands its operations amid ongoing economic pressures on farmers statewide. McHenry brings over a decade of experience in agricultural organizations, including roles at the Maryland Grain Producers Association and the Maryland Pork Producers. She also serves as executive director of the Mid-Atlantic 4R Nutrient Stewardship Association and as a sales representative for Stine Seed.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of McHenry is significant as it aligns with broader efforts to strengthen advocacy for Maryland’s agricultural sector, which generated $3.3 billion in cash receipts in 2022 and supports over 350,000 jobs. Her expertise is expected to enhance the council’s outreach, particularly in engaging younger farmers through programs like those of the Maryland Young Farmers. The council’s flagship event, the Taste of Maryland Agriculture, serves as a key platform for discussing issues such as farm bill updates and climate adaptation. McHenry’s role is crucial in ensuring the success of these initiatives, which aim to promote a viable agricultural industry in Maryland.
What's Next?
The council’s flagship event, the Taste of Maryland Agriculture, is set to continue its advocacy efforts with the next gala scheduled for February 5, 2026. The council also administers educational grants to agencies and organizations promoting Maryland agriculture, with applications for the 2025-26 cycle recently opened. These initiatives aim to educate the public on farming’s role in food security and economic stability. McHenry’s hiring is expected to bolster these efforts, particularly in engaging younger farmers and addressing challenges like fluctuating commodity prices and regulatory changes.
Beyond the Headlines
McHenry’s appointment reflects the interconnectedness of Maryland’s farming communities and the resilience of its agricultural sector. Her family farm, part of a multigenerational operation inducted into the Agriculture Hall of Fame, exemplifies the strength of grain and livestock production in the region. As Maryland navigates a value-added agriculture sector contributing $20.6 billion annually, leaders like McHenry play a vital role in sustaining rural economies.
