What's Happening?
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and Flatiron Health have announced the renewal of their collaboration, extending their partnership through 2028. This agreement, which originated in 2014, aims to advance real-world data (RWD) research
across leading cancer centers. As part of the renewed collaboration, Flatiron Health is expanding access for NCCN Member Institutions to its AI-powered oncology intelligence platform, Flatiron Telescope. This platform enables a broader range of users to conduct research and generate insights from Flatiron's curated, de-identified oncology datasets, which span over 6 million patient journeys. The collaboration will continue to provide analytic support, educational programming, and research grants through the Flatiron Grants program, offering up to seven grants biannually to eligible subscribers.
Why It's Important?
This renewed collaboration is crucial for advancing cancer research and improving patient care in the U.S. By providing NCCN Member Institutions with enhanced access to real-world data and advanced analytical tools like Flatiron Telescope, researchers can more effectively study patterns of care, identify predictive biomarkers, understand healthcare disparities, and conduct comparative effectiveness research. This access to a vast, high-quality oncology database allows for faster and more comprehensive insights into cancer treatments and outcomes, ultimately leading to the development of more effective and equitable cancer care strategies. The continued funding through research grants also supports critical investigations that might otherwise be limited by resources, fostering innovation across the NCCN alliance.
What's Next?
The immediate next step involves the deployment of Flatiron Telescope to NCCN Member Institutions, enabling researchers to explore Flatiron data, assess research feasibility, and generate insights more intuitively and in real-time. This platform will allow investigators to dynamically stratify large datasets by various clinical parameters, accelerating study planning and execution. The collaboration will also continue its educational programming to help clinical fellows and academic investigators navigate the complexities of real-world data. Furthermore, Flatiron Health will continue to award research grants, supporting ongoing and new high-impact research projects. The long-term goal is to leverage these resources to ensure that everyone has access to quality, effective cancer care and prevention, and to provide insights into the implementation of guideline-concordant care and identify gaps in care delivery.
Beyond the Headlines
The expanded collaboration between NCCN and Flatiron Health signifies a growing trend in healthcare: the integration of artificial intelligence and real-world data to transform medical research and practice. Flatiron Telescope's AI-powered capabilities, which translate natural language research questions into structured queries, democratize access to complex data analysis, moving it from specialized programmers to front-line clinical researchers. This shift has the potential to significantly accelerate the pace of discovery in oncology, allowing for more agile and responsive research. Moreover, by providing longitudinal insights into how clinical practice aligns with NCCN Guidelines, the collaboration can help identify and address disparities in biomarker testing, drug sequencing, and geographic access to care, ultimately fostering a more equitable and personalized approach to cancer treatment across the U.S.
