What's Happening?
South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is organizing a series of 'Sustaining the Legacy' conferences aimed at helping farmers and ranchers evaluate and update their estate plans. These conferences will
take place between December 2025 and March 2026 in Winner, Mitchell, Aberdeen, and Watertown. The events are designed for farming and ranching families at all stages of planning, offering guidance on passing on farm and ranch assets and businesses. Estate planning and ranch transition attorneys, along with other industry experts, will present the material. Registration is required, with an early registration fee of $70 per person, increasing to $80 closer to the event dates.
Why It's Important?
These conferences are crucial for the agricultural community as they provide essential knowledge and tools for effective estate planning. This is particularly important for ensuring the continuity of family-owned farms and ranches, which are vital to the local economy and food supply. By facilitating the transfer of assets and businesses to the next generation, these events help preserve the agricultural heritage and economic stability of rural communities. Participants will gain insights into legal and financial strategies that can prevent disputes and ensure a smooth transition of ownership.
What's Next?
The conferences will be held on specific dates in each location: Winner on December 4, 11, and 18, 2025; Mitchell on January 8, 15, and 22, 2026; Aberdeen on February 3, 10, and 17, 2026; and Watertown on March 3, 10, and 17, 2026. Interested participants must register through the SDSU Extension Events website. The initiative is expected to draw significant interest from the farming community, potentially influencing estate planning practices across the region.
