Researchers from the University of Cambridge and the University of Copenhagen have demonstrated that completely fair electoral systems are mathematically impossible. Their study, published in the Annals of Operations Research, analyzed various electoral systems and found
inherent trade-offs between regional representation, proportionality, and fixed parliament size. The study was prompted by the 2022 Danish national election, where the proportional system failed to align votes with seats due to increased political fragmentation. The researchers propose an algorithm called 'geographically ranked guaranteed proportionality' to address these challenges, though it sacrifices regional representation.
