What's Happening?
On January 23, 2026, in Ashgabat, the FAO Director-General, Dr. QU Dongyu, met with H.E. Rashid Meredov, First Deputy Chair of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation
between the FAO and Turkmenistan at various levels. A significant outcome of the meeting was the signing of the Host Country Agreement, which marks a milestone in their partnership and sets the stage for establishing an FAO Country Representation in Turkmenistan. Discussions also covered Turkmenistan's achievements in self-sufficiency in milk and meat production, the development of the cotton and textile industry, and the strategic importance of sustainable water management due to the country's reliance on transboundary water resources.
Why It's Important?
This agreement is crucial as it enhances Turkmenistan's agricultural capabilities and aligns with global efforts to address climate change through sustainable agrifood systems. The partnership aims to improve food security and economic diversification in Turkmenistan, a landlocked developing country. By focusing on sustainable water management and regional cooperation, the agreement supports Turkmenistan's role in aiding neighboring countries like Afghanistan. The FAO's commitment to establishing a regional knowledge hub on combating desertification further underscores the importance of this collaboration in addressing environmental challenges in arid regions.
What's Next?
The establishment of an FAO Country Representation in Turkmenistan will likely lead to increased collaboration on agricultural projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing food security and climate resilience. Turkmenistan's commitment to supporting regional cooperation on food security and water management could foster stronger ties with neighboring countries. The FAO's support for Turkmenistan's efforts to combat desertification may also lead to the development of new strategies and technologies that can be shared across the region.
