What's Happening?
Drone Major, a UK-based consultancy, has partnered with olee.space, a defence photonics company, to enhance the UK's anti-drone capabilities. The collaboration focuses on deploying high-power fibre lasers to counteract intruding drones, offering a cost-effective
solution at less than UKP1 per drone intercepted. This technology aims to address the challenge posed by the proliferation of low-cost drones that traditional air defence systems struggle to counter sustainably. The system combines multiple lasers to create a highly focused beam capable of engaging targets up to 6 km away. It is designed to integrate with various tracking and detection systems, making it a versatile 'plug-and-play' solution. The technology has been field-tested by the Indian Armed Forces and validated in various environments.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Drone Major and olee.space represents a significant advancement in counter-drone technology, which is crucial for protecting critical national infrastructure. As drones become more prevalent, the need for effective countermeasures grows, particularly for sectors like airports, energy, and national security. The ability to intercept drones at a low cost could lead to widespread adoption of this technology, enhancing security measures across multiple industries. Furthermore, the integration capabilities of the system allow for seamless incorporation into existing security infrastructures, potentially reducing the need for extensive new investments.
