New research from Bangor University has identified a limitation in continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), revealing that these devices cannot accurately determine the severity of extreme high and low blood sugar episodes. While CGMs have revolutionized diabetes
care by providing near-continuous blood sugar tracking and alerts, the study found that when blood sugar levels move beyond the monitor's fixed measurement range, the devices can only indicate that levels are extremely high or low, not the precise degree of severity. This blind spot affects almost all users with type 1 diabetes over time, with 93.5% to 100% of participants in four international clinical trials experiencing at least one reading at the upper or lower measurement limit. The issue was particularly prevalent for high glucose levels, with over one-third of these episodes lasting at least an hour in some studies. Younger individuals and those with higher HbA1c levels were more likely to encounter these limits.
