What's Happening?
For the first time, a direct public transportation route to Ben Gurion Airport will operate on Shabbat, thanks to the 'Na'im Busofash' initiative. This new service, Route 711, will connect Shoham and Tel
Aviv, stopping at Terminal 1 of the airport. The initiative is funded by 12 local authorities and aims to fill the gap left by the absence of state-run public transportation on Shabbat. Previously, travelers had to rely on expensive taxis or private shuttles to reach the airport on Saturdays. The 'Na'im Busofash' initiative, which began in 2019, has seen significant growth, with over 1.8 million passengers last year. The new route is expected to increase ridership by 14% in 2026, with expanded services and frequencies.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of Shabbat public transport to Ben Gurion Airport addresses a significant gap in Israel's transportation infrastructure. With flights operating on Saturdays, the lack of public transport options has been a longstanding issue, particularly affecting those who cannot afford private transport. This initiative not only provides a practical solution for residents and tourists but also highlights the role of local authorities in addressing public needs where national policies fall short. The move could set a precedent for other regions, encouraging further municipal-led transportation solutions and potentially influencing national policy on public transport operations during Shabbat.
What's Next?
The success of this initiative could lead to further expansions and similar projects in other regions. As demand for public transport on Shabbat grows, local authorities may continue to step in to provide services, potentially leading to a broader reevaluation of national transportation policies. The increased ridership and positive reception could also prompt discussions on the feasibility of integrating such services into the national transportation framework, potentially influencing future legislative changes regarding public transport operations on Shabbat.
