What's Happening?
Rooftop solar photovoltaic systems in Puerto Rico have reached a significant milestone, accounting for 20% of the island's total energy capacity by the end of 2025. This development marks a substantial increase in solar capacity, which has grown faster
than any other energy source over the past decade. Between 2016 and 2025, rooftop solar installations contributed to 81% of the new generating capacity in Puerto Rico. As of 2025, rooftop solar became the second-largest energy source, following petroleum liquids and surpassing natural gas. The growth in distributed generation resources, particularly rooftop solar paired with battery systems, has been driven by the need for reliable electricity amidst frequent power outages. On average, 3,850 rooftop solar systems were installed monthly in 2025, culminating in 191,929 systems by year-end.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of rooftop solar systems in Puerto Rico is crucial for enhancing energy reliability and sustainability on the island. The shift towards solar energy reduces dependency on fossil fuels, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. The integration of distributed battery storage systems further supports grid stability by allowing stored energy to be dispatched during supply shortages. This transition not only addresses frequent power outages but also positions Puerto Rico as a leader in renewable energy adoption. The financial incentives for battery owners to export excess electricity to the grid encourage further participation in renewable energy initiatives, fostering economic benefits and energy independence.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, Puerto Rico is likely to continue expanding its renewable energy infrastructure, with potential policy enhancements to support further growth in solar capacity. The success of the Customer Battery Energy Sharing program could lead to more widespread adoption of virtual power plants, enhancing grid resilience. Stakeholders, including energy companies and policymakers, may explore additional incentives to accelerate the transition to renewable energy. The ongoing collaboration between companies like Sunrun and Tesla with Puerto Rico's grid operator, LUMA, suggests a continued focus on innovative energy solutions.
