Rooftop solar photovoltaic systems in Puerto Rico have reached a significant milestone, accounting for 20% of the island's total energy capacity by the end of 2025. This development marks a substantial increase in solar capacity, which has grown faster
than any other energy source over the past decade. Between 2016 and 2025, rooftop solar installations contributed to 81% of the new generating capacity in Puerto Rico. As of 2025, rooftop solar became the second-largest energy source, following petroleum liquids and surpassing natural gas. The growth in distributed generation resources, particularly rooftop solar paired with battery systems, has been driven by the need for reliable electricity amidst frequent power outages. On average, 3,850 rooftop solar systems were installed monthly in 2025, culminating in 191,929 systems by year-end.
