A study published in the journal Cell Reports on August 19 reveals that supercentenarians, individuals aged 110 and older, possess an unusually high abundance of specialized immune cells known as CD4 cytotoxic
T lymphocytes (CD4 CTLs). These cells are known for their ability to kill tumor cells in certain cancers. Researchers analyzed blood samples from 28 adults across three age groups (70–99, 100–109, and 110 and older) and found that the proportion of CD4 CTLs increased significantly with age, with median percentages of 4%, 9.6%, and 17.6% respectively. The study, led by Kosuke Hashimoto from the University of Osaka, suggests that the immune system continues to adapt to age-related challenges even in extreme old age, with clonal expansion of these T cells indicating responses to persistent immune threats.
