What's Happening?
NASA, in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has released calibrated L-band data from the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission. This data is now accessible through the Alaska Satellite Facility Distributed Active
Archive Center (ASF DAAC) and NASA Earthdata. The release, which began on July 20, 2026, includes observations from June 17, 2026, onwards. The NISAR mission, a joint satellite initiative, utilizes L-band and S-band radar systems to provide detailed views of Earth's changing surface. The L-band radar, developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, operates at a 10-inch wavelength, allowing it to penetrate vegetation and, under certain conditions, snow and ice. This capability is crucial for studying various Earth surface changes, including forests, wetlands, glaciers, and ground deformation. The mission aims to build a consistent, long-term record of surface changes by imaging the same locations every 12 days, even through cloud cover.
