Virginia Tech is at the forefront of a new scientific paradigm known as 'agentic science,' which leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance research capabilities. Led by chemical engineering professor Hongliang Xin, in collaboration with John Kitchin
from Carnegie Mellon University and Heather Kulik from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the team has published a commentary in Nature Machine Intelligence. This work outlines the potential of AI 'agents' to transform scientific research by automating tasks and accelerating discovery processes. The concept envisions AI as an integral part of the research environment, both in digital and physical labs, acting as a 'brain' to make decisions and conduct experiments autonomously.
