What's Happening?
A data breach in the Minnesota Department of Human Services' MnCHOICES system has compromised the personal information of approximately 304,000 individuals. The breach occurred over nearly a month starting in late August when a user affiliated with a licensed
health care provider accessed the system without proper authorization. The accessed data included names, sex, date of birth, phone numbers, addresses, Medicaid IDs, and the last four digits of social security numbers. Additionally, for 1,206 individuals, more detailed demographic information was accessed. The unauthorized user had legitimate access to some data but exceeded the necessary scope for their work assignments. The breach was detected in mid-November by FEI Systems, the company managing MnCHOICES, which then reported the incident to the state. A forensic investigation was conducted, and affected individuals were notified in January. The Department of Human Services has since implemented additional safeguards to prevent future incidents.
