What's Happening?
Malawi has inaugurated its first utility-scale battery energy storage system, a significant step in modernizing its electricity infrastructure. The 20-megawatt, 40-megawatt-hour facility, located in Kanengo, Lilongwe, was developed by the Electricity
Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). This project, funded by a $20 million grant from GEAPP, is designed to enhance grid stability and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. The battery system is expected to reduce reliance on costly diesel generation and unlock approximately 100 megawatts of renewable electricity previously constrained by grid limitations. This initiative is part of Malawi's broader National Energy Compact, which aims to increase electricity access from 25.9% to 70% by 2030.

These efforts are expected to diversify Malawi's energy mix, improve resilience, and reduce exposure to climate-related disruptions.
