A new analysis by Climate Central, extending peer-reviewed research through 2025, reveals that human-caused sea level rise is responsible for approximately eight out of every ten days of coastal flooding across 71 U.S. locations. The frequency of coastal flooding has
more than tripled since the 2000s, reaching an average of 14 days per year between 2020 and 2025. This increase is attributed to rising sea levels, which are a direct consequence of climate change, primarily due to warming oceans causing seawater to expand and melting glaciers and ice sheets. The share of flood days linked to human-caused sea level rise has significantly increased from about 40% in the 1950s to 81% today across 34 stations with historical data. Locations like Wilmington, NC, experience 108 days of coastal flooding annually, with about 76% of these days directly attributable to human-caused sea level rise.

Approximately 30% of the U.S. population resides in marine coastal counties, making them highly vulnerable to these disruptive and costly floods. Furthermore, critical infrastructure and hazardous sites along the coast, such as oil and gas wells, landfills, and sewage treatment facilities, face increased risks of inundation, potentially leading to broader environmental and public health crises. The economic burden of these floods is substantial, with just one inch of water capable of causing approximately $25,000 in property damage, and average flood insurance claims exceeding $66,000 between 2016 and 2022.

The trend of increased coastal flooding is expected to continue and worsen in the coming decades, with high tide flooding projected to occur ten times more often by 2050 compared to 2020. While deep and rapid reductions in heat-trapping pollution are crucial to prevent worst-case long-term outcomes, sea levels will continue to rise even under low-emissions scenarios. Coastal communities will need to implement adaptation and resilience measures, such as raising roads, stabilizing shorelines, relocating low-lying buildings, and restoring coastal ecosystems, to mitigate the inevitable impacts.
