What's Happening?
The 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City has initiated a $75 million fundraising campaign aimed at educating the millions of U.S. youth who do not remember the September 11 attacks. This effort is bolstered by a $25 million matching pledge from former
New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg through his Bloomberg Philanthropies. The campaign seeks to secure a permanent funding source to reach approximately 100 million Americans born after the attacks. The museum plans to use the funds to develop new on-site exhibits and classroom materials that frame the aftermath of 9/11 as a period of selfless service. Since its opening in 2014, the memorial has attracted about 97 million visitors, but it has faced financial challenges, particularly following pandemic-related closures.
Why It's Important?
The fundraising campaign is crucial for ensuring that the legacy of 9/11 is preserved and communicated to younger generations who did not experience the events firsthand. The initiative aims to provide educational resources that highlight the unity and resilience demonstrated in the aftermath of the attacks. This is particularly significant as the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, offering an opportunity to reflect on the impact of the attacks on American society and the ongoing challenges faced by first responders and victims' families. The campaign also addresses the need for accessible education, ensuring that students, first responders, and veterans can visit the museum without financial barriers.
What's Next?
As the 25th anniversary of 9/11 nears, the museum plans to launch an exhibit titled 'In Their Honor,' which will tell stories of service and resilience. The funds raised will support free museum access for students and other groups, and help develop educational programs for teachers who lack firsthand experience of the events. The museum aims to create a trusted set of materials that convey the basics of what happened on 9/11, fostering a deeper understanding among young people. The campaign also seeks to inspire a new generation to engage in acts of service and community building.
