What's Happening?
A new book titled 'Hidden Hospitality: Untold Stories of Black Hotel, Motel, and Resort Owners from the Pioneer Days to the Civil Rights Era' has been published by Brown Books Publishing Group. Authored by Calvin Stovall Jr., the book aims to document
the significant contributions of Black entrepreneurs in the hospitality industry, which have often been overlooked. The publication features over 125 vintage black-and-white photographs and introduces readers to individuals who provided accommodations to underserved communities and created spaces that served as hubs for civic organizations during pivotal moments in American history. The book was financially supported by several organizations, including the AHLA Foundation and the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board.
Why It's Important?
The publication of 'Hidden Hospitality' is significant as it sheds light on the contributions of Black hoteliers, a segment of history that has been largely underrepresented. By documenting these stories, the book not only honors the legacy of these entrepreneurs but also provides a more inclusive narrative of American history. This can influence current and future generations by highlighting the diverse contributions to the hospitality industry and encouraging a broader understanding of its history. The book also serves as a resource for those interested in the intersection of race, business, and history, potentially impacting educational curricula and discussions around diversity in the industry.
