What's Happening?
The Tyne Bridge, an iconic structure in the North East of England, is undergoing a significant £38.9 million renovation. The project, which began in April 2024, is entering a new phase as it approaches
its 100th anniversary in October 2028. Recent inspections revealed corrosion in the steelwork due to peeling paint, damaged deck joints, and leaking drains. In response, extensive repairs have been undertaken, including steelwork fixes, concrete and masonry repairs, waterproofing, and drainage improvements. The project has also involved a full repaint of the bridge. Labour councillor June Sathian, cabinet member for transport and climate at Newcastle City Council, highlighted the progress made in 2025, noting the completion of over 2,000 individual repairs. The project has secured a final £6 million in funding to ensure its completion. Esh Construction, the company overseeing the renovation, plans to erect new scaffolding in autumn 2026 to facilitate further repairs to the bridge's archway in 2027.
