What's Happening?
Booking.com, in collaboration with Oxford Economics, has released a report highlighting the significant economic impact of travel demand facilitated by its platform across Europe. In 2025, this activity is projected to support €691 billion in economic activity,
encompassing the EU-27, the UK, and Switzerland. The report, unveiled at VivaTech 2026 in Paris, emphasizes the role of technology and innovation in enhancing competitiveness and unlocking economic opportunities for European businesses. The travel demand facilitated by Booking.com is expected to support 4.7 million jobs and generate €175 billion in wages. The economic impact extends beyond accommodation, affecting local suppliers and cross-border trade, with nearly €300 billion in additional economic activity generated across Europe.
Why It's Important?
The findings underscore the critical role of digital travel platforms like Booking.com in driving economic growth, job creation, and regional development. By enabling businesses, particularly SMEs and independent accommodation providers, to access global demand, these platforms contribute significantly to local economies. The travel sector is a major economic driver in Europe, supporting millions of jobs and generating substantial tax revenues. The report highlights the potential of technology to level the playing field for small businesses, allowing them to compete with larger entities on a global scale. This economic activity not only benefits major destinations but also supports smaller businesses and regional economies across Europe.
