What's Happening?
The Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro, Aleksa Bečić, and the Minister of Defense, Dragan Krapović, visited the KERSHIP shipyard in Lanester to assess the progress of the construction of two offshore patrol vessels (OPV 60M). This visit marks a significant
milestone in Montenegro's naval modernization efforts, as it is the first time the officials have boarded the first vessel since construction began. The visit included a review of the integration of main equipment and upcoming industrial milestones. The first vessel, PETAR I, is scheduled for delivery in April 2027, with the second, PETAR II, following six months later. This project represents Montenegro's second-largest defense investment since its independence in 2006, aimed at enhancing its naval capabilities and supporting its anticipated accession to the European Union in 2028.
Why It's Important?
The construction of the OPV 60M vessels is crucial for Montenegro as it seeks to modernize its naval forces and strengthen its operational contributions to NATO in the Adriatic and Mediterranean regions. This investment not only enhances national security but also aligns with Montenegro's strategic goals of EU accession and increased regional cooperation. The project underscores the importance of international partnerships in defense and the role of advanced maritime capabilities in maintaining regional stability. The successful completion of these vessels will likely bolster Montenegro's defense posture and its standing within NATO.
What's Next?
Following the visit, the focus will be on meeting the scheduled delivery dates for the vessels and ensuring that the construction progresses smoothly. The Montenegrin Navy, in collaboration with KERSHIP and the French Defense Procurement Agency, will continue to oversee the project. As Montenegro moves closer to EU accession, further investments in defense and infrastructure are expected to support its integration into European structures. The successful deployment of these vessels will also likely influence future defense procurement and modernization strategies.
