During the Fourth of July weekend, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) conducted a Boating Under the Influence (BUI) checkpoint at Chatfield Reservoir, one of the busiest boating weekends in the state. The initiative aimed to ensure safety on the water
by checking for alcohol impairment among boaters. Brian Phillips, CPW's statewide boating education safety coordinator, emphasized the dangers of alcohol consumption while boating, noting that it is a leading factor in boating incidents nationwide. The checkpoint resulted in one BUI arrest, three citations, and 12 warnings. CPW also checked for proper permits and safety equipment, such as life vests and fire extinguishers. The operation was part of a broader effort to promote safe boating practices, especially given the recent drowning of an experienced swimmer at the reservoir.
