Recent genetic studies have revealed significant genetic links between various eating disorders and other psychiatric conditions. Researchers analyzed data from 27 datasets, including nearly 40,000 individuals with binge-eating behavior and over 24,000
with anorexia nervosa, alongside millions of controls. The findings indicate that anorexia nervosa is strongly linked genetically to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), while binge eating shows a strong genetic connection to ADHD. Both eating disorders were also found to be associated with genes linked to depression and anxiety. This research challenges the traditional view of eating disorders as purely psychological illnesses, suggesting they are 'metabo-psychiatric' conditions influenced by both psychiatric and metabolic genetic factors. The study identified six genomic regions associated with binge eating and eight with anorexia nervosa. It's important to note that the genetic testing was primarily limited to the European population.
