Moderna and Merck have released detailed results from their Phase 3 clinical trial for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, designed to treat melanoma. The study, which involved over 1,100 adults with high-risk melanoma whose tumors
had been surgically removed, demonstrated a significant reduction in the risk of cancer recurrence or death. Patients who received the personalized mRNA vaccine alongside the standard immunotherapy drug Keytruda experienced an 82.2% rate of remaining alive without their melanoma returning after two years, compared to 70% in those treated with Keytruda alone. This represents a 42% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death. The vaccine is custom-made for each patient by analyzing genetic material from their tumor and healthy cells to identify unique cancer-specific mutations, which then inform the design of an mRNA vaccine encoding up to 34 tumor-specific targets.
