A recent study published in Nature Communications challenges the conventional understanding of human evolution. Led by Mark Hubbe from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and Katerina Harvati from the Senckenberg Centre for Human Evolution and Palaeoenvironment,
the research suggests that the evolution of the genus Homo, characterized by increasing brain size and decreasing facial robustness, may not have followed a straightforward path driven by natural selection. Instead, the study proposes that these changes occurred during periods when biological, environmental, or cultural barriers were weakened, allowing for significant evolutionary shifts. The researchers analyzed 87 fossil skulls, representing various Homo species, and found that neutral evolutionary processes and long periods of stasis better explained the observed changes than continuous directional selection.
