What's Happening?
Brooklyn Org, formerly known as the Brooklyn Community Foundation, has successfully doubled its donor-advised funds and significantly increased its contributed revenue and assets under management by reimagining its approach to philanthropy. The organization
shifted from a transactional model to a more participatory and community-focused approach. This change involved engaging with community members as partners rather than just prospects, listening to their needs, and acting on their feedback. From 2019 to 2025, the number of donor-advised funds doubled, contributed revenue grew from $2.4 million to $28.8 million, and assets under management increased from $74.5 million to $146.8 million. This transformation allowed Brooklyn Org to increase its total grant-making from $7.4 million to $19.5 million, supporting neighborhood-led initiatives and hosting public forums to connect residents with decision-makers.
Why It's Important?
The shift in Brooklyn Org's approach highlights a broader trend in philanthropy towards more inclusive and participatory models. By engaging younger donors, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, who are skeptical of traditional philanthropy, the organization has tapped into a new source of funding and community involvement. This approach not only increases financial contributions but also strengthens community ties and empowers residents to have a say in the future of their neighborhoods. The success of Brooklyn Org's model could serve as a blueprint for other philanthropic organizations looking to adapt to changing donor expectations and enhance their impact on local communities.
What's Next?
Brooklyn Org plans to continue its community engagement efforts by hosting more listening sessions and expanding its participatory grant-making opportunities. The organization aims to further integrate community input into its funding decisions and create more pathways for residents to get involved. This includes offering hands-on opportunities like site visits, grant-making advisory roles, and volunteer and civic engagement programs. By fostering a sense of ownership and participation among donors and community members, Brooklyn Org hopes to sustain and grow its impact in the coming years.
