What's Happening?
The community of Hazen, North Dakota, recently dedicated a sculpture in honor of native son Ret. Maj. Gen. Eldon Joersz. The ceremony celebrated Joersz's remarkable achievement of piloting an Air Force jet to a world airspeed record 50 years ago. On July
28, 1976, Joersz, then a captain, along with Maj. George Morgan, set an airspeed record of 2,193 mph, or Mach 3.3, in a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. This record for the world's fastest jet aircraft still stands today. Joersz's distinguished career included commanding Air Force units across the country, such as the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base, and flying 158 combat missions during the Vietnam War. U.S. Senator John Hoeven, R-ND, attended the event, praising Joersz for his service and dedication. U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer, R-ND, also attended. The 14-foot by 26-foot replica and monument, costing approximately $180,000, was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Hazen Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, the City of Hazen, Hazen Community Development, and Joersz's friends and family.
