What's Happening?
A Sumatran orangutan has been recorded using a human-made canopy bridge to cross a public road on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. This marks the first documented instance of such behavior, according to conservationists. The orangutan was captured on a motion-sensitive
camera as it carefully navigated the bridge, which spans the Lagan–Pagindar road in Pakpak Bharat district. This road, essential for connecting remote villages to vital services, also divides the habitat of approximately 350 orangutans, isolating them into two separate forest areas. The bridge is part of a conservation initiative by the Indonesian group Tangguh Hutan Khatulistiwa (TaHuKah) and the Sumatran Orangutan Society, aimed at mitigating the impact of development on orangutan habitats.
