What's Happening?
NBN Co has reported a significant increase in rebates paid to its retailers due to fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) service problems, coinciding with its copper replacement program. In the last quarter of 2025, the company paid 32,411 rebates related to FTTP service issues,
a 40% increase from the previous quarter. The increase in rebates is attributed to the complexity of full fibre upgrades, which sometimes exceed the committed service levels. NBN Co is in the process of converting premises from copper to fibre, having upgraded over a million premises. The company is negotiating with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) regarding service standards, arguing that proposed standards are costly and technically infeasible.
Why It's Important?
The increase in rebates highlights the challenges NBN Co faces in transitioning from copper to fibre infrastructure. This transition is crucial for improving internet reliability and speed across Australia. However, the complexity and cost of these upgrades pose significant challenges. The outcome of negotiations with the ACCC could impact future investments in fibre infrastructure and the overall quality of internet services. The situation underscores the broader challenges of modernizing telecommunications infrastructure, balancing cost, and service quality.
