What's Happening?
The Indian government has implemented the 'Namo Drone Didi' scheme, a central sector initiative aimed at providing agricultural drones to Women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs). With a budget of Rs. 1261 Crores allocated for 2023-2026, the scheme has distributed
1094 drones, with 500 specifically under the Namo Drone Didi initiative. These drones are intended to modernize agricultural practices and enhance productivity among SHGs. The women involved have received training as drone pilots through authorized Remote Pilot Training Organizations. The initiative aims to diversify SHG activities and improve income opportunities for women in rural areas.
Why It's Important?
The distribution of drones under the Namo Drone Didi scheme represents a significant step towards modernizing agriculture in India, particularly for women-led SHGs. By integrating drone technology, these groups can improve efficiency and productivity in agricultural practices, potentially leading to increased income and economic empowerment for women in rural communities. The initiative also highlights the Indian government's commitment to leveraging technology for agricultural development and women's empowerment, which could serve as a model for similar programs globally.
