What's Happening?
The Shapiro Administration, through the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), has announced an investment of $1,341,652 in grants to municipalities across 22 counties via the Municipal Assistance Program (MAP). These grants are designed
to help local governments plan for and effectively implement various services and improvements aimed at supporting residents and strengthening communities. Governor Josh Shapiro has significantly increased funding for the MAP program, securing a $1.5 million increase (nearly 266 percent) in his first year, and an additional $2 million in the bipartisan 2026-27 state budget. Since January 2023, the Shapiro Administration has invested a total of $5,845,351 to support 118 community projects through this program. The MAP awards can cover costs for comprehensive community plans, land use ordinances, transit revitalization studies, regional police and fire services, shared personnel agreements, and boundary change studies, among other initiatives.

Bensalem Economic Development Corporation in Bucks County received $47,510 for a Strategic Economic Revitalization Plan to address aging commercial corridors and stalled redevelopment. The City of Lebanon will update its comprehensive plan with $39,500 to guide land use decisions and infrastructure planning for the next decade. Lackawanna County received $90,000 to update multi-municipal plans and zoning ordinances. These projects are expected to lead to tangible improvements in local infrastructure, services, and economic vitality. Municipalities and counties can continue to apply for MAP funding, which covers up to 50 percent of eligible costs for community planning and shared services programs, ensuring ongoing support for local development initiatives.
