A new report from the Stanford AI Index reveals that four out of five American high school and college students are currently using artificial intelligence (AI) for schoolwork. Despite this widespread
adoption, only half of middle and high schools have any AI policy in place. Furthermore, among teachers working in schools that do have policies, a mere 6% describe these policies as clear. The report highlights a significant gap between the rapid integration of AI tools by students and the lack of clear institutional guidance. Students are primarily using AI for tasks such as finding sources (51%), editing or revising essays (50%), and brainstorming (50%). The study also notes that 47% of students wanted to use AI for a task but were unsure if it was permitted, indicating a governance failure rather than an integrity issue.
