What's Happening?
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has established Carolina’s Regional Emerging Special Pathogens Treatment Center (RESPTC), a specialized facility designed to isolate and treat patients infected with deadly pathogens like the Ebola virus.
More than 70 medical professionals have undergone extensive training to provide care while ensuring the safety of healthcare personnel and other patients. Co-led by Dr. William Fischer II, Dr. David Wohl, and program manager Brooke Brewer, the center is a collaborative effort with UNC Health colleagues. In 2022, Carolina became one of 13 centers nationwide funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response. Dr. Fischer, who leads emerging pathogens research for the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases, emphasized that UNC's decade of experience in treating and researching dangerous infectious diseases has equipped them to prepare for future outbreaks. The center has developed a protocol for handling suspected cases, starting with clinicians contacting the state health department's on-call epidemiologist, followed by a joint assessment with RESPTC staff to determine if isolation at Carolina is necessary.

This includes a planned eight-hour lead time for patient arrival after notification from ASPR or state public health authorities. The center's efforts will also involve continued collaboration with other national centers funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to share best practices and coordinate responses to potential outbreaks. The focus will remain on maintaining a high level of readiness to respond to any high-consequence infectious disease that may emerge or be introduced into the U.S.
