What's Happening?
VIA Metropolitan Transit's board has unanimously approved a $767.2 million budget for the new fiscal year, which began on October 1. This comprehensive budget allocates $383.8 million for daily operations and $383.4 million for capital projects. Key initiatives
funded by this budget include the expansion of bus services, the addition of 150 new bus shelters, and the establishment of a new VIA Link zone. These investments are part of preparations for the upcoming launch of the VIA Advanced Rapid Transit Green Line. The budget also marks the first full fiscal year of revenue collection from an additional one-eighth-cent sales tax, approved by San Antonio voters in 2020, which is expected to generate approximately $51.2 million in fiscal year 2027 to support rapid transit lines, microtransit programs, and other transportation projects.
Why It's Important?
This significant budget approval by VIA Metropolitan Transit underscores a major commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure and services in San Antonio. The allocation of funds for expanded bus services and new bus shelters directly addresses customer feedback and aims to improve the daily commuting experience for thousands of residents. The introduction of a new VIA Link zone will further extend microtransit options, providing more flexible and on-demand transportation solutions. Crucially, these investments are foundational for the launch of the Advanced Rapid Transit Green Line, which is expected to transform urban mobility in the region. The dedicated sales tax revenue ensures a stable funding source for these long-term projects, demonstrating a sustainable approach to public transit development and economic growth within the city.
What's Next?
VIA's immediate focus for the fiscal year will be to maintain the service improvements implemented under its Better Bus Plan and to prepare for the VIA Advanced Rapid Transit Green Line. The agency plans to expand its VIA Link on-demand service with a new Stone Oak zone, following the successful launch of the Southeast Zone. The budget also includes the addition of 150 bus shelters, a direct response to customer demand for more comfortable waiting areas. A new transit ambassador team, comprising nine employees, will be launched to assist passengers and support bus operators. Construction on the Green Line is expected to be 80% underway or completed by the end of fiscal year 2027, involving station construction, utility relocation, and staffing adjustments in anticipation of its April 2028 opening. Additionally, a five-year, $1.1 billion capital improvement plan is in place, covering the Green and Silver rapid transit lines, new vehicles, facility upgrades, and the Eastside Transit Center.
Beyond the Headlines
The substantial investment in public transportation by VIA Metropolitan Transit reflects a broader trend in U.S. cities towards sustainable urban development and enhanced quality of life. By prioritizing improved bus services, microtransit options, and rapid transit lines, San Antonio is positioning itself for future growth while addressing critical issues such as traffic congestion, environmental impact, and equitable access to opportunities. The focus on customer satisfaction, evidenced by the addition of bus shelters and transit ambassadors, highlights a shift towards a more user-centric approach in public services. Furthermore, the agency's commitment to retaining and recruiting a robust workforce, including over 1,000 full-time bus operators, is vital for the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of these ambitious transportation initiatives, fostering local employment and economic stability.
