An experimental surgery aimed at treating Alzheimer's disease by enhancing the clearance of Alzheimer's-associated proteins from the brain has been banned in China. The procedure, known as deep cervical lymphovenous anastomosis (DCLVA), involves connecting
the lymphatic system to nearby veins to remove proteins like beta-amyloid and tau, which are associated with Alzheimer's. Despite the ban, more than 2,000 people in China are believed to have undergone the surgery, which was initially developed by Xie Qingping at Hangzhou Qiushi Hospital. The procedure gained attention after a video showed a man with Alzheimer's walking again post-surgery. However, the Chinese National Health Commission banned the procedure outside of research settings due to a lack of evidence on its safety and effectiveness. Initial trials in the US and Singapore suggest the surgery is safe for up to six months, with some cognitive improvements noted, but these trials were not randomized or blinded.
