Athens International Airport (ATH) has been recognized as the Overall Winner at the Routes World 2025 event in Hong Kong, also winning the Over 20 Million Passengers category. The airport handled a record
31.9 million passengers in 2024, marking a 25% increase from 2019 levels and a 13% rise year over year. This growth has continued into 2025, with traffic up 6.9% in the first seven months. The increase is attributed to stronger air connectivity, particularly in international segments, which have grown 8.9% in 2025. Notably, U.S. connecting traffic through ATH rose 155% in 2024 compared to pre-pandemic levels and climbed another 45% in the first half of 2025. The airport has expanded its U.S. network to nine destinations, offering 103 weekly frequencies, including new services to Los Angeles and upcoming routes to Dallas-Fort Worth.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of Athens International Airport underscores its significant role in enhancing global connectivity, particularly between Europe and the United States. The airport's expansion and increased passenger traffic highlight its importance as a hub for international travel, contributing to tourism and economic growth in the region. The strategic partnerships with airlines and the introduction of new routes are likely to boost Athens' position as a year-round travel destination, benefiting local businesses and the hospitality industry. The airport's success in increasing passenger capacity and connectivity can serve as a model for other airports aiming to recover and grow post-pandemic.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, Athens International Airport plans to continue its expansion, with American Airlines launching new service from Dallas-Fort Worth in May 2026. Additionally, connectivity to India is set to strengthen with direct flights from IndiGo and Aegean Airlines. The airport's ongoing efforts to drive tourism development through marketing campaigns and collaboration with regional stakeholders will further position Athens as a key travel destination. The airport's expansion plan aims to increase passenger capacity by 60% by 2032, indicating continued growth and development in the coming years.
