What's Happening?
The Charleston Conference, traditionally held in Charleston, South Carolina, has expanded its reach to Asia for the first time, with the inaugural event taking place in Bangkok, Thailand. This expansion is driven by Asia's significant contribution to global
research output and the need to address unique regional cultural, linguistic, and policy considerations. The conference aims to foster open dialogue among librarians, publishers, and vendors, focusing on themes such as generative AI, equitable research access, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The event features a keynote on 'Asia in the Climate Change Landscape,' highlighting the role of institutional libraries and publishers in supporting positive change. Over 500 attendees have registered, including participants from the USA and Europe, eager to gain insights from Asian perspectives.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the Charleston Conference to Asia underscores the region's growing influence in the global research landscape. By addressing issues like generative AI and sustainable development from an Asian perspective, the conference promotes a more balanced and inclusive global research ecosystem. This initiative not only enhances collaboration between Western and Asian scholars but also highlights the importance of regional voices in shaping global research policies. The event's focus on sustainability aligns with global efforts to address climate change, emphasizing the critical role of libraries and publishers in disseminating knowledge and fostering informed discussions. The participation of international attendees further indicates a strong interest in understanding and integrating diverse perspectives into global research practices.
What's Next?
Following the conference, recorded sessions will be available on the Whova platform for registered attendees, and later on the Charleston Conference YouTube channel, ensuring broader access to the discussions. This availability will allow stakeholders who could not attend in person to benefit from the insights shared. The conference's success may lead to more frequent international editions, fostering ongoing dialogue and collaboration across regions. Additionally, the themes discussed, particularly around sustainability and AI, are likely to influence future research agendas and policy-making, encouraging further integration of regional insights into global strategies.
