What's Happening?
A research team led by Xiaoxiang Zhu at the Technical University of Munich has created the Global Building Atlas, a high-resolution 3D map of nearly every building on Earth. This project, funded by the European Research Council, maps 2.75 billion structures
across six continents using satellite imagery collected since 2019. The atlas offers a resolution of 3 meters by 3 meters, making it 30 times more precise than previous databases. The dataset provides detailed information on each building's footprint, shape, and height, allowing for comprehensive analysis of built environments. This data is expected to aid urban planning, disaster management, and climate modeling by providing insights into population density, infrastructure needs, and environmental risks.
