What's Happening?
CABI is actively working to strengthen regional collaboration in Latin America, focusing on sustainable agricultural production and food security. Dr. Yelitza Colmenarez, CABI's Centre Director in Brazil, participated in the Second Regional Dialogue on Science, Technology, and Innovation in Agri-Food Systems in Latin America and the Caribbean. The event, held at the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture headquarters in Costa Rica, aimed to create a strategic action plan for science, technology, and innovation in agriculture across the Americas. Dr. Colmenarez discussed potential collaboration with PROCISUR, a program fostering research and development among Southern Cone countries. She introduced initiatives like the PlantwisePlus program and the CABI BioProtection Portal, which provide resources for smallholder farmers and biocontrol products. The dialogue included representatives from various agricultural research institutes and organizations, emphasizing the importance of collaborative platforms for addressing food security and sustainable production.
Why It's Important?
The collaboration efforts led by CABI are crucial for advancing sustainable agriculture and food security in Latin America. By integrating traditional knowledge with scientific research, these initiatives aim to empower local communities and address environmental and social challenges. The establishment of collaborative platforms facilitates the exchange of knowledge, innovations, and best practices among scientists, farmers, policymakers, and industry leaders. This approach not only enhances food security but also promotes sustainable agricultural practices, which are essential for preserving ecosystems and natural resources. Strengthening regional cooperation can lead to collective impact, transforming isolated efforts into comprehensive solutions that benefit the entire region.
What's Next?
Future collaboration between CABI and PROCISUR is expected to reinforce food security and sustainable production at the national level. Brazil, as an active member of PROCISUR, will continue to contribute through its national agricultural research institutions and policy frameworks. The ongoing dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders will help monitor progress, ensure accountability, and enable rapid responses to crises such as climate shocks or pandemics. These efforts aim to transform isolated initiatives into collective impact, ultimately helping to feed growing populations while preserving ecosystems and natural resources.
Beyond the Headlines
The inclusive approach adopted by CABI and its partners ensures that solutions are both effective and culturally appropriate. By fostering regional and global coordination, these initiatives empower local communities and integrate traditional knowledge with scientific research. This strategy not only addresses immediate challenges but also lays the foundation for long-term sustainable development in the region.
