What's Happening?
The Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education has approved a districtwide artificial intelligence implementation plan to guide the use of AI technology in classrooms and administrative settings starting in the 2026-27 school year. The plan establishes
guidelines for responsible and ethical AI use, emphasizing academic integrity, student privacy, and critical thinking. Teachers will be required to communicate when AI use is permitted, restricted, or prohibited on assignments, and students must disclose how AI tools were used in their work. The district plans to expand digital citizenship and AI literacy instruction for students in grades 6-8.
Why It's Important?
The adoption of an AI implementation plan reflects the growing integration of technology in education and the need for clear guidelines to ensure its ethical use. By establishing standards for AI use, the district aims to support learning while safeguarding academic integrity and privacy. This initiative can serve as a model for other districts as they navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in education. The focus on digital citizenship and AI literacy is crucial for preparing students to engage with technology responsibly and critically.
