What's Happening?
The Calexico City Council has approved two significant items related to roadway and alleyway improvements in the city. During a regular meeting, the council moved forward with phase three of an ongoing alley improvement project, which aims to pave approximately
3.46 miles of unpaved alleyways to mitigate air pollution. The project is funded by a federal grant from the Environmental Protection Agency. Rove Engineering Inc. was awarded the contract with a bid of $899,824. Additionally, the council approved roadway improvements near the Calexico Intermodal Transportation Center, utilizing $974,885 from Local Transportation Authority bond proceeds. These improvements are necessary to ensure proper functionality and transit operations at the project site.
Why It's Important?
These infrastructure projects are crucial for Calexico as they address both environmental and transportation needs. The alleyway improvements aim to reduce air pollution by paving unpaved areas, which can contribute to dust and particulate matter affecting lung health. The roadway improvements are essential for the functionality of the Calexico Intermodal Transportation Center, a key transit hub in the city. By enhancing the surrounding roadways, the city can improve traffic flow and support economic activities in the downtown area. These projects reflect the city's commitment to improving public health and transportation infrastructure, which can have long-term benefits for residents and businesses.
What's Next?
The next steps involve the execution of construction agreements and the commencement of work on the approved projects. The city manager is authorized to sign the construction agreement with Rove Engineering Inc. and manage any change orders within a specified budget. For the roadway improvements, the city will work with the Imperial County Transportation Commission and Hazard Construction to complete the necessary enhancements. These projects are expected to progress over the coming months, with ongoing oversight to ensure timely completion and adherence to budgetary constraints.
