What's Happening?
Minneapolis has initiated a student design competition to create a permanent memorial for George Floyd, who was murdered by police in May 2020. Organized by Rise & Remember in partnership with Floyd's family and the city, the competition invites students
from across Minnesota to submit designs for a memorial at the site where Floyd died. The competition, which opened on March 2 and closes on May 19, will award cash prizes to the top ten designs, with the winner receiving $1,500. The top three designs will advance to a global competition open to designers, architects, and public artists. A panel of family members, community stakeholders, and experts will select the final design, which will then undergo a city approval process.
Why It's Important?
The creation of a permanent memorial for George Floyd is significant as it represents a commitment to honoring his legacy and the global movement against police brutality and institutional racism that his death sparked. The competition provides an opportunity for young designers to contribute to a meaningful project that addresses social justice and community healing. It also highlights the role of public art in fostering dialogue and reflection on critical societal issues. The memorial is expected to serve as a lasting symbol of resistance and solidarity, reinforcing the importance of remembering and learning from past injustices.
What's Next?
Following the design competition, the selected memorial design will undergo a city approval process, which may include obtaining necessary permits and agreements. The city plans to break ground on a road construction project at the memorial site, providing an opportunity to prepare the area for the installation. The involvement of community stakeholders and Floyd's family in the selection process ensures that the memorial will reflect the values and aspirations of those most affected by his death. The project is expected to inspire further initiatives aimed at addressing racial inequality and promoting social justice.
