What's Happening?
Asthma and Lung UK has raised concerns about the increasing number of emergency hospital admissions for respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The charity's
analysis of NHS data shows a significant rise in hospital admissions, with 2.3 million people admitted between April 2024 and March 2025. The Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) has responded by increasing GP appointments and preparing for winter earlier than usual. However, the charity calls for a national strategy to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed, as flu levels are predicted to be the highest in a decade.
Why It's Important?
The rise in respiratory illnesses poses a significant challenge to the healthcare system, potentially leading to overwhelmed hospitals and increased healthcare costs. Effective management and prevention strategies are essential to reduce hospital admissions and ensure patients receive timely care. The situation highlights the need for improved year-round care and a comprehensive national strategy to address respiratory illnesses, which could alleviate pressure on the NHS and improve patient outcomes.
