Several U.S. states, including Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Indiana, Montana, Nebraska, and Texas, have passed legislation to ban the sale, production, or both, of cultivated (lab-grown) meat. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis publicly signed the state's
law, stating, “Take your fake lab-grown meat elsewhere. We’re not doing that in the state of Florida.” This legislative push by conservative state governments targets an industry that has faced increasing skepticism from venture capitalists and challenges in commercialization. Despite an initial gold rush with over 140 companies and $3 billion in investment, the industry has struggled with high production costs, scalability issues, and regulatory hurdles. Investment in the sector significantly dropped in 2023, raising only $177 million. The industrial biotech consultant Joel Stone indicated in 2024 that the likelihood of lab-grown meat producing even 10 percent of the meat supply in the foreseeable future is “zero.” Currently, cultivated meat is available for purchase at only one store globally, Huber’s Butchery in Singapore, which sells lab-grown chicken shreds from GOOD Meat.
