Michigan state officials have announced the euthanasia of an 18-month-old unvaccinated quarter horse filly in Roscommon County due to Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a mosquito-borne virus. This marks the second horse fatality from EEE in Michigan this
year, following a 1-year-old quarter horse colt in Clare County that was also euthanized after testing positive for the virus and being under-vaccinated. Additionally, a human case of EEE was reported in Roscommon County earlier in August, the first since 2021. Michigan State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland emphasized the preventability of EEE and other mosquito-borne diseases through animal vaccinations and mosquito control measures. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services monitors several arboviruses, including West Nile Virus, which has affected seven residents this year.
