What's Happening?
Hawthorn Crossings in North Minneapolis is set to become Minnesota's first community co-owned shopping center. Residents are invited to invest as co-owners with a minimum contribution of $1,000, alongside institutional investors. This initiative aims
to foster community involvement and provide residents with a stake in local economic development. The project is designed to empower the community by allowing them to have a say in the management and success of the shopping center.
Why It's Important?
The community co-ownership model represents a shift towards more inclusive economic development strategies. By allowing residents to invest in local businesses, the initiative seeks to build community wealth and ensure that economic benefits are shared more equitably. This approach could serve as a model for other communities looking to enhance local engagement and economic resilience. It also highlights the potential for innovative financing solutions to address economic disparities and promote sustainable development.
