The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine has been operating without external electricity for over a week, forcing it to depend on emergency diesel generators to cool its reactors. This marks the 27th time the facility has lost external power since
Russia's full-scale invasion began. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that the Russian-occupied plant has approximately 10 days of diesel fuel remaining on site. Although the plant's six reactors are not currently producing electricity, a continuous power supply is critical to prevent nuclear fuel from overheating. The IAEA is actively pushing for a temporary local ceasefire to facilitate repairs and restore a more reliable external power connection to the plant. Supplies of diesel were delivered from an alternate location recently, as the plant had not received diesel from its usual off-site storage facility for about six months.
