The study involved 105 dogs, primarily Malinois, Border Collies, and Labrador Retrievers, and observed their interactions with toys. About a third of the dogs showed signs of addiction-like behaviors, such as agitation when toys were inaccessible and refusal to engage in other activities. The study, published in Scientific Reports, is the first to empirically document this phenomenon in dogs, suggesting parallels with human addiction.
